San Diego Marathon Trip

26.2 miles is only 13.1 more miles than a half marathon. The extra miles beyond the half mark is deceiving, however. I am not exaggerating when I say that it was the most challenging thing I have ever done (and that includes childbirth!). The smile of jubilation in the first photo is my realization that the journey was finally coming to an end. I would not have made it to 26.1 without my childhood friend, Amy, by my side. I bawled like a baby when I crossed the finish line. The ice bath at the end was heavenly. The celebratory beer later that night, exceptional. The realization that it was all over: the best!

Will I do another one? The day of the event I swore I would never do it again. But, like having a baby, you forget the pain and remember the good moments and the surge of endorphins at the end. I committed to do the Portland Marathon with Amy in October of 2012. I would like to experience another marathon in the climate that I train in with a gentler course.

We had a half day to explore San Diego the day after the race. Eva loved the palm trees, ocean, and carousel rides. We will definitely plan another trip to San Diego was a family.

Eva's Second Birthday Party

It's nice when we learn from our mistakes, isn't it? Eva's first birthday party in Seattle was a complete disaster. We had way too much on our plates. Too much food to cook, too many people, and we missed out on the main event: enjoying our daughter, taking pictures, and singing Happy Birthday to her. This year we significantly paired down the guest list, went across the street to Zeek's for pizza, and then returned to our house for cupcakes. We had a two hour time table that we stuck too and everything worked out so well. All the toddlers and adults were happy. Eva really had a sense that it was her birthday and she basked in the attention. When we sang "Happy Birthday" to her she looked around the room at everyone and just smiled as if she was saying, "I'm special, and I know it." I swooned with happiness. Eva was also very gracious about the gifts that she received.

I'm still in disbelief that my baby's day as a baby are a thing of the past. She is definitely a preschooler now!

Homage to the Mothers in the World

I entered motherhood with an inordinate amount of hubris. I didn't know it then, but I sure recognize the signs now. Having spent most of my life with kids, either teaching, babysitting, I thought I had the parenting thing down pat. Boy, was I wrong! People warned me. Fellow teachers would say, "Just you wait. It's totally different when you have your own." The skeptic in me kept thinking, "How different could it really be? Come on!" I doled out parenting advice with abandon. My advice was abundant and plentiful, albeit completely lacking in personal experience. All it took to knock me down from my comfortable, self satisfied perch of alleged expertise was two weeks of colic. As I rocked, cradled, dipped, danced, sometimes even thrusted with my little nine pound bundle of joy, I had serious doubts about my ability to execute the job before me. Isn't it a mother's job to comfort her infant? The doubts still linger now and then but now I just know that it's part of the job description. I actually worry about the parents who don't worry.

Every time I start to get comfortable something changes in the pattern of our little one. Eva's always been a great sleeper and naps like a champ. Last week she started to resist her nap and sometimes even fusses at night too. Jeff and I have been going back and forth trying to analyze all of the causes of this sudden change. Two weeks into it and we are at the same point: Who knows? It could be any number of things (changes in her care, developmental shift, sickness, etc). All we can do is keep consoling her as we try to figure out this new life event. And of course we worry all the while. Is she OK? Is she sick? If we rock her to sleep each time, are we creating dependency on these coping mechanisms for sleep? I keep returning to the same conclusion and continue to trust my mothering instincts to do the best thing for her at that moment.

As we approach the Eve of Mother's Day, I've been reflecting on all the individuals out there who have supported my mothering efforts. If there is one thing I know for sure, it's the fact that no one does this gig without some kind of support team. Our first angel came in the form of a visit from our friend, Marnie, who taught Jeff and I how to bathe Eva and even spent the night by my side ready to help out when needed with nursing and soothing our little fussmunchkin. Only a week later, Aunt Joanie arrived who nursed us, not just Eva, back into shape after our first two weeks into the newborn state. I'll always be grateful for Michelle, Eva's beloved nanny who was with us from eight months to her second year of life. Eva adores her, as do we. I can't imagine those first few years without her support with caring for Eva.

And then there are all my mama friends who are a constant source of support and inspiration as they exhibit how fully and completely they love their little ones with abandon. My friend, Nina, is just a phone call or visit away as we share in the JOY of motherhood with our little lion cubs. This post would be incomplete if I did not give the biggest shout outs to my own mom who is the epitome of self sacrifice and love. Both our moms, Maureen and Mary, continually dole out their mothering wisdom. I also learned a great deal growing up as I watched my sisters, sister in laws, and nieces parent from afar. I will save my effusive praise for my husband for Father's Day. But I can't resist saying that I would not be such a good mom if I didn't have such a fabulous husband who also happens to be a pretty fantastic father.

Happy Mother's Day!

Egg Hunt for Easter

Eva had TWO egg hunts in one day for Easter! Her first Easter egg hunt was with our Stroller Strides class. After a great workout, we went to a nearby park and the kids hunted through the playground equipment to find all of their eggs. Eva caught on quickly to the whole tradition and started cramming the chocolate into her mouth. I think this was her first experience with candy. Pandora's Box is now officially open!

Later that evening, Eva's friend, Loch, had an Easter Egg Hunt. We had so much fun! Jeff was able to join this time. We enjoyed relaxing and we were able to watch the kids have a good time together.

We look forward to more Easter festivities!

Chesnut the Bunny Visits!

Today at the Bellevue College Parent Ed program we had a visitor! Chestnut the Bunny! Eva had never seen a real, live bunny before. She's quite enamored with her stuffed bunnies so words can't express her excitement to actually touch and pet a real bunny. She wouldn't leave the bunny's side and she exhibited no trepidation whatsoever to pet him. It was quite the introduction to Easter Week. We have many more egg hunts and parties to come so stay tuned for more photos!

UW Cherry Blossoms

After a week of staying indoors with a sick baby, I packed our bags and headed to Jeff's work with Eva in tow, snotty nose and all. Friday was the first glimpse of spring that we've had, and the relentless rains and gray skies were starting to get to us. The day turned out to be gorgeous with blue skies and not a drop of rain in sight. Every year we make a point of going to UW's Quad to see the cherry blossoms and they did not disappoint. Eva was completely blown away by the blossoms and kept running along the cobblestone path trying to reach up and touch the flowers. You would never know that the kid had a fever and a bad cold for the entire week with the pace that she kept up on that campus. We just kept following the blur of a pink tutu with our camera perched ready to take a photo for the rare moment when she stood in one place for a second. We had such a good time. It made up for all the days that we spent indoors this week.

My Birthday

I'm a lucky girl, and boy, did I know it for my birthday this year. I had a full weekend of festivities that started with dinner with girlfriends on Friday in Seattle (yes, the big city!), followed by a night of Irish music and dancing at our friends' annual St. Patrick's Day party, then bookended with a relaxing evening with our friends, John, Nina and their son Loch. We feasted on Dungeness crab, mussels, and capped off the evening with a chocolate decadance cake. I'm still experiencing the hangover of happiness that I call bliss. My favorite birthday memory is captured in these photos of my little buddies, Loch and Eva, who sat on my laps as I wished for another. Yes, that's right, Jeff. If you are reading this, I'm ready for number two! In the meantime, I'll keep claiming Loch as my own. He calls me his best friend, which I think is the sweetest thing ever.
